The Texas Longhorns were thoroughly outclassed, outdunked, and ultimately outscored 82-63 by the North Carolina Tar Heels in Chapel Hill Wednesday evening. From the outset, things didn't look good for the Longhorns, especially by way of point guard Myck Kabongo's sloppy effort. In his dozen college games thus far, Kabongo has become known as a slow starter who plays his best basketball in the 2nd half. But against North Carolina, complaining of back pain and illness, Kabongo's start was much worse than slow. It was horrendous. Texas coach Rick Barnes would wind up benching Kabongo for the entirety of the 2nd half, which made perfect sense considering how out of his element Kabongo looked in the Dean Dome. But what didn't make sense was Barnes following up the benching by explicitly slamming Kabongo in the media after the game. Barnes did the same thing to J'Covan Brown after the North Carolina State game earlier this season, again in a case where he had clear reason to criticize. But since then J'Covan hasn't necessarily responded in positive fashion, at times looking like a mere shell of his full potential on the court. It's yet to be seen if the public tongue lashing will have a motivating effect on Kabongo, a kid known for having a good attitude in general. But at a University where football coach Mack Brown always makes it a point not to call his individual players out in interviews, Barnes may be stepping himself right into some hot water if this young team winds up imploding just like his '09-'10 team did under similar circumstances.
If Wednesday night did prove anything, it's that the Longhorns have a long way to go before being able to hang with a top-tier team such as North Carolina. And the Big12 Conference arguably sports 3 top-tier teams in Kansas, Baylor, and Missouri, each of which Texas will have to play twice during conference play. Texas isn't deep enough to have a key player such as Kabongo have off nights. Granted, that's a lot to expect from a freshman. But the very same will be expected of fellow freshmen Jonathan Holmes, Julien Lewis, Sheldon McClellan, and Jaylen Bond. Holmes and McClellan each, along with junior J'Covan Brown scored 16 points against North Carolina, but much of it was in trash time. Freshman Sterling Gibbs did a decent job filling in for Kabongo at the point. But it seems that it only takes one wheel falling off its leg for the entire Longhorn cart to ditch itself. Barnes, with all his tenure and success, hasn't necessarily proven himself able to coach a team up through trying times. His brazen style is more apt to breed dissension and apathy. So in many ways, it will be up to players themselves to make the most of this season. With McClellan and Bond coming on strong as of late, there are signs of improvement that could potentially augment the core of J'Covan and Kabongo in their attempt to rise above the dark clouds Barnes has cast upon them. But it will have to be a full team effort. Otherwise, the Big12 will eat us alive.

Texas 77, Temple 65
Saturday afternoon at the Erwin Center, the Texas Longhorns bested the Temple Owls 77-65 behind a strong 2nd half effort and exceptional guard play. J'Covan Brown scored 23 points and Myck Kabongo added 18 points as the Longhorns' backcourt duo continuously found their way to the rim against the Temple typically-stout defense. Freshman forward Jaylen Bond enjoyed his best game of the season thus far, scoring 12 points on 6-7 shooting and grabbing 8 rebounds along the way. Texas as a team outrebounded Temple 46-20, led by Clint Chapman collecting 13 rebounds in his best rebounding effort of the season. It wasn't expected for this year's Longhorn team to be winning rebounding battles against anyone, so it's been a pleasant surprise to see the Horns doing just that game after game as of late. The Longhorns improved their record to 9-2 and will be traveling to Chapel Hill to play the mighty North Carolina Tar Heels on Wednesday evening.

Texas 93, Nicholls State 40
Tuesday evening at the Erwin Center, the Texas Longhorns ran the Nicholls State Colonels right off the court with a highly lopsided 93-40 victory. Texas guard J'Covan Brown led all scorers with 23 points, but it was freshman forward Jaylen Bond who made the most of a much weaker opponent by collecting 18 points and 12 in a mere 24 minutes of play. Freshman guard Sterling Gibbs also emerged with his best game of the season, hitting all 5 of his shots for 14 points in only 18 minutes on the court. Freshmen Myck Kabongo and Sheldon McClellan continued their string of impressive games, and senior Clint Chapman made a solid contribution of 10 rebounds, including 4 on the offensive end of the court. The Longhorns improved their record to 8-2 and next face the Temple Owls in Austin on Saturday.

Texas 86, Texas State 52
A 6-2 Texas State Bobcats squad was really feeling good about itself after a Tuesday night victory in San Marcos over the University of Houston. But come Saturday evening, the Bobcats had to make the short jaunt up to Austin only to be completely dismantled by the Texas Longhorns 86-52. Texas freshman Julien Lewis led the way for the Longhorns with 19 points on 5-8 shooting from the 3-point line. 4 other Longhorns reached double digits in scoring, including 13 from Myck Kabongo, 13 from Sheldon McClellan, 11 from J'Covan Brown, and 11 from Alexis Wangmene. The Longhorns outrebounded the Bobcats 37-23 and held Texas State to a paltry 25.9% shooting for the game. With a 19 point lead at half-time, it was the Longhorns' 1st 7 offensive possessions of the 2nd half, that saw them launch 7 3-pointers and make 6 of them, that built the lead to 30 and made the game a done deal. The Longhorns improved to 7-2 on the season and are now only a week away from games against the tougher competition of Temple and North Carolina.

Texas 80, Texas-Arlington 62
Tuesday evening at the Erwin Center, freshman Sheldon McClellan had his coming out party to the tune of 23 points and an 80-62 victory for the Longhorns over the Texas-Arlington Mavericks. McClellan looked like a trained killer, hitting for 17 points in the 1st half alone. Meanwhile J'Covan Brown had yet another off night, held to 11 points on 2-11 shooting. Freshmen Myck Kabongo and Julien Lewis made notable contributions, with Kabongo adding 13 points and 8 assists and Lewis scoring 13 points in 15 minutes. And senior Alexis Wangmene recorded yet another solid performance, with 10 points on 4-5 shooting to go along with 7 rebounds. Texas-Arlington threw a series of fluctuating defensive schemes at the Longhorns and actually put up a good fight before fading at the end. Next up for Texas is a game with Texas State on Saturday night at the Erwin Center.

Texas 69, UCLA 59
Saturday afternoon at the Los Angeles Sports Arena, the Texas Longhorns defeated the UCLA Bruins 69-59. After falling behind throughout the 1st half of the game, Texas guards J'Covan Brown and Myck Kabongo took over, leading the Longorns on a 20-7 run to begin the 2nd half of play. Brown finished with 22 points on 9-15 shooting, while Kabongo scored 13 points to go along with 8 assists. Seniors Alexis Wangmene and Clint Chapman also logged notable performances, with Wangmene scoring 8 points in 24 minutes and Chapman collecting 6 points and 7 rebounds in 19 minutes. Overall, the Longhorns shot an impressive 54.7% from the field and even managed to outrebound UCLA despite yielding 17 offensive boards to the Bruins. Texas improves its record to 5-2 and now has its 1st big win of the season under its belt.
